Province announces $4.1 million for programs at African Nova Scotian Justice Institute

HALIFAX, N.S. — The African Nova Scotian Justice Institute is getting $4.1 million from the provincial government to fund its programs aimed at tackling the over-representation of Black Nova Scotians in the justice system.

The institute provides support, research and outreach programs in areas like police accountability, court support for African Nova Scotians, bail alternatives, reintegration programming, legal education and human rights. The provincial funding will support its operational costs through March 2026.

The institute, one of the first of its kind in Atlantic Canada, is led by the African Nova Scotian Decade for People of African Descent Coalition.

"This funding announcement is a welcome sign of the strengthening partnership between the government and the African Nova Scotian community to address systemic racism in the justice system," Robert Wright, the institute's interim executive director, said in a release.

"Our work together will result in greater access to justice for all Nova Scotians."

The Justice Department said African Nova Scotians represent about three per cent of the province's population but about 14 per cent of adults in provincial correctional facilities.
